Salary to Hourly Calculator
Enter an annual salary to see what it actually pays per hour, week, and month. This is the fastest way to compare a salaried offer against an hourly job - or against freelance day rates.
The defaults assume 40 hours across 52 weeks. Salaried professionals who work 45-50 hour weeks should raise the hours field: a $70,000 salary at 50 hours/week pays a very different hourly rate than at 40.
How the calculation works
Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year)
Worked example: $55,000 at 40 hours/week over 52 weeks means 2,080 hours, so $55,000 ÷ 2,080 = $26.44 per hour. The same salary on a 37.5-hour contract week equals $28.21 per hour - the shorter week raises the effective rate by nearly $2.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert salary to hourly pay?
Divide the annual salary by total hours worked in the year. Total hours are hours per week times weeks per year. A $60,000 salary at 40 hours/week, 52 weeks = 2,080 hours, which is $28.85 per hour.
What is $50,000 a year per hour?
At a standard 2,080 annual hours, $50,000 works out to $24.04 per hour, about $961.54 per week.
What is $70,000 a year per hour?
$70,000 divided by 2,080 hours is $33.65 per hour. If you regularly work 45 hours a week instead, the true rate drops to $29.91.
Why does my real hourly rate matter?
It makes offers comparable. Two jobs can both 'pay $70k' while one quietly demands 10 extra unpaid hours a week - a lower effective rate than the hourly job down the street.
